چکیده
The toxicity and time-dependent sorption of three hydrophobic organic chemicals to Rhodococcus rhodochrous bacteria were investigated. In experiments, environmentally relevant concentrations of pentachlorophenol (PCP), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and dichlorobiphenyl (DPCB) were applied to living (both growing and nongrowing) bacteria as well as to dead bacteria. For PCP (an ionizing chemical), bacterial growth decreased and death increased as the PCP concentration increased. In sorption experiments, the partition coefficient was affected by (a) active uptake of PCP by living bacteria but not by dead bacteria, (b) death of the living bacteria due to PCP toxicity, and (c) saturation of site specific sorption as the PCP concentration increased. HCB (a nonionizing chemical) did not affect the growth or death of the bacteria at all HCB concentrations investigated. In sorption experiments, the partition coefficient depended on the rate of bacterial growth relative to the sorption rate. The sorption rate depended on the state of bacterial aggregation, and this changed with time. Results for DPCB (a non-ionizing chemical with equilibrium partition coefficient similar to that of HCB) were similar to those for HCB.

Effects of sedimentary sootlike materials on bioaccumulation and sorption of polychlorinated biphenyls.
Bioaccumulation of hydrophobic organic chemicals from sediments containing soot or sootlike materials has been hypothesized to be limited by strong sorption of the chemicals to the soot matrixes. To test this hypothesis, we quantified bioaccumulation of 11 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into the aquatic oligochaete Limnodrilus sp. exposed to spiked sediment with and without the sootlike mater...

Sorption kinetics of hydrophobic organic chemicals to and from suspended sediment and soil particles is described by a radial diffusive penetration model modified by a retardation factor reflecting microscale partitioning of the sorbate between intraaggregate pore fluids and the solids making up the aggregate grains. In light of this and other sorption kinetics models, a closed-loop-stripping a...

This paper reviews current knowledge of biogeochemical cycles of pollutant organic chemicals in aquatic ecosystems with a focus on coastal ecosystems. There is a bias toward discussing chemical and geochemical aspects of biogeochemical cycles and an emphasis on hydrophobic organic compounds such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and chlorinated organic compounds u...
متن کاملRole of organic matter, clay, and iron contents in the sorption of oxytetracycline on river sediments
Background: Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a widely-used antibiotic; metabolism studies indicate only partial assimilation of it inside the body. Traditional wastewater treatment plants cannot remove OTC, and this results in the release of considerable amounts of the drug into aquatic environments. There is much concern over the role of residual antibiotics in the development of new generations of ba...
متن کاملInfluence of organic amendments on the sorption of pentachlorophenol on soils.
The influence of pH on the sorption of pentachlorophenol (PCP) onto three organic amendments, char, humic acid (HA) and peat, and the effect of organic amendments on PCP sorption to three kinds of soils were evaluated. The sorption of PCP on these sorbents fitted the Freundlich model well, suggesting that PCP sorption isotherms were nonlinear with exponential coefficient (N) value lower than 1....
